buzz coming from the nut ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing the TBC for a few weeks now without a hitch, but now there is a sort of buzz noise on the A string at that nut. When i press down on the string over the nut and play the string the noise goes away. How do i get this noise to go away ?

Your description of the problem implies that there might be a lack of down pressure at the nut. Check and make sure that the string is wound down on the tuning peg shaft toward the headstock. That will insure that there is enough pressure for the string to seat well and break correctly at the nut.

Could be that the nut slot got widened. If so, there's a few ways of fixing that as well. Re-seating the string by running it back and forth to make a new groove (not so much reccomended), getting a new nut cut, etc.

I've got the same EXACT problem on my MIM jazz...my open A string buzzes but stops when I put my hand over it just beyond the nut.

I've been wanting to replace the nut anyways and just ordered and adjustable brass nut so I'll let ya know how it goes.

more windings on the tuning peg

3 should get you enough angle to get rid of said buzz

Sorry, but if there's not enough downward pressure on the A string, a new nut won't make a lick of difference. The only two known cures for it is to leave more string length when you cut it and add a couple extra windings around the post, or buy a string tree for the A. Jeff Berlin does the extra string tree, but I prefer to wind more string around the post. Less invasive, no extra holes required. It's a common problem on Fender style basses, and in my opinion, the only flaw to a great instrument design.

Yeah...after reading up on this more I'm guessing some sort of string-tree will be the best bet. I've got about 4.5 windings on it and it's still buzzing. Not that big of a deal but still a pain in the ass when you don't have one handy lying around.
