Buzzing Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
My A string buzzes significantly when played open, and my E string buzzes slightly when played open as well. A guy who owns a local, small music store fixed my action and neck curve problems that I had, but the buzzing stayed. He wrote a note saying to leave more length on the strings and wind them more around the tuning pegs. I had cut the strings at 4.5 inches away from the tuning post. How much more should I leave next time when I get new strings? Also, I have been playing strings ranging from .45 to 1.0 or 1.05. Does the size of the string affect the rattling as well? If so, should I get thicker or thinner strings? I play a 4 string MIM Fender Jazz Bass. Also, regarding the strings I'm looking for a warmer tone as opposed to the very bright ones I've been playing. I play most genres, but mainly rock. Help would be appreciated, thanks.

What type of strings are you currently using? I love GHS Boomers, IMO

Fret buzz = set up issue or "plucking" too hard for current set up specs.

i use Dean Markley Blues Steel Nickel Plated. its all i could get at the time and im not an expert on strings but warmer ones would be nice. the biggest concern i have is my buzzing issue though.

to get rid of the buzz you need to adjust the neck, string height, fret level, how hard you pluck the string or any combination of those factors

I don't want to take away from danjl131, but I have similar buzzing problems. My E and G strings buzz when I play them on the first fret. I was wondering if I needed a truss rod adjustment. If not, is it one of the above solutions? Thanks.

Then he didn't, "fix your action", did he?

Play these strings open, and reach back behind the nut, squeeze the offending strings; if the buzz stops, you are, in fact, in need of more string break behind the nut. You may want to add a string tree to hold the E & A strings down, if this proves to be the problem.

If this isn't it, you probably have a couple of nut slots that are too deep;
this certainly should be addressed by whomever set this bass up. A shim under the nut, reslot the D&G strings. Often, however, these nuts break when they're being pulled, and, frankly, I'd superglue it back together when it's going back in, on top of the shim.
