Can anybody help with a P-bass problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody
I bought a 1980 Blue Fender Precision Bass Special a couple years ago, and have enjoyed it very much.
One recurring problem is that while I'm playing, the volume will unexpectedly drop out and then return with no apparent reason.
This happens with the battery powered pick up in the off position more than when it is turned on.
Should I have the instrument re-wired?

Thanks all,
Brian in Cincinnati

Sounds like a ground issue. If you have a wire grounding out, it will cut the sound off. If it's ratteling around in there, the sound could come and go.

Take it to a qualified repair man if you can't figure it out yourself.

Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks to get it fixed.

Bet it's a loose wire. Unless you're hopeless with such things, open it CAREFULLY (and use a screwdriver that's a good match to the screws) and just look for a wire that's loose or holding on by a single strand...or for crossed wires that could short out.

OTOH, should be very cheap for a repairman to look at if you prefer that.
