Can I tint a finished fretboard? ie: Mighty Mite

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a new mighty mite jazz neck, plays great and all, but I'm putting together kind of a '57 P (white) project and I'd like to get the neck that vintage amber tint. Can I ReRanch the whole neck? I'm figuring this would screw up the fretboard, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

If it's a maple board, paint it. If it's a rosewood board, mask it.

ReRanch or StewMac tint will both work. Some folks like Tru-Oil finishes too. Check out the ReRanch refinishing forums.

Also, try this site. There's a wealth of info there: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/finely-finished/

It is a maple board. Just wondering if a finish would have screwed up the feel since it already has a clearcoat. A lot of people are recommending Tru-oil, wouldn't it have to be bare wood to do this?

Also finding alot on using ReRanch neck tint spray. My question comes down to: can I spray over this already finished mighty mite neck. Or will finish on top of finish screw things up?

Dark brown shoe polish. "Wax on, wax off."

I've heard the shoe polish thing, it seems pretty simple, wipe on, wipe off, then buff out. correct?

Yup, just like the Karate Kid. Wax on, wax off.

Thanks very much everyone, Pilgrim, I think i'm going to try the shoe polish thing. Kiwi seems to be the go-to brand but also apparently contains carcinogens...go figure. I'll see what I can find at the store tomorrow.
