Can a Squire P-Bass neck fit on a MIM Fender Jazz bass body?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm an amatuer bass player, and i recently received a Mexican made Fender Jazz Bass. but it came with a Squire Precision bass neck. it looked fine at first. but when i brought it to Guitar Center to get the strings put on. it sounded real punchy, and i couldn't play any notes past the 12th fret cause it felt like the strings were touching the neck and even when i pressed down my hardest it wouldn't sound

So is the neck the problem? can Squire necks just not go on Fender bodies? what should i do?

You need a complete setup first. Don't worry about parts until you have it done.

There are stickies on this forum leading to DIY info on setups...or take it to a local pro. Chances are there is nothing wrong with the neck, it's just not set up.

Well im sorry i dont understand...

Should i get the neck reapplied to the body?

or order a new neck maybe?

i think instead of paying over a $100 for a new neck id just buy a new Epiphone Thunderbird for $200.

You need to get the bass set up, as in get the truss rod and action adjusted by a professional. Your problem of notes above 12th fret not sounding out sounds like the strings are too low and/or too much neck relief.

A truss rod adjustment is probably you're safest bet, even as a "just in case" measure.

It could just be that you need the bridge adjusted. Raising or lowering the action alone could make it sound better.

To avoid using the term "set up" (which evidently is not familiar to the OP, telling me that he hasn't read the stickies as requested...), the explanation is:

You need to take the pieces to a luthier, have him/her assemble them and do a complete adjustment of all components. If there is a problem with the neck, that person will be able to detect it and will inform you.

If you want to know whether the neck fits, you could take the extreme measure of sitting it in place on the body. If it fits, it fits. If it does not fit, then it does not fit.

If you're reluctant to spend the money, I can assure you that you will need to have this work done anyway, even if you screw it together yourself. Having a pro do it will assure you of not damaging the instrument by improper assembly.

Let me answer the first question.

Yes, a Squier P can fit with a Mexican J.

But there's slightly more (only slightly more, really) to making it fit to play than just screwing it in place. It should not require any tools that aren't already in any normal home.
