Carving my own nut (don't laugh)...

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I have this length of graphite material that I have to turn into a nut. I have a dremel, so I'm pretty confident I can do it, good thing I have 2' of material.

Does anyone know the rule of thumb when carving the string slots?

Half the string thickness deep, string thickness wide???

You need proper files. You can shape it with a dremel, but cutting nut slots with one is not a good idea. And as far as depth and all that goes, make it fit the string for width, and fit the bass as far as depth.

Go for it. You have two feet of material. Thats 16 nuts to get it right.

The dremel worked well and it only took me 2 tries, so I have enough for 7 more if I need them...

Don't use the Dremel for the slots. Buy nut files. Log on to Stewart-McDonalds website, and read the way to do a nut, with feeler gauges. I've done several this way, and it has been the best way that I have tried to date.
