Question Changing fretboard wood?

Sign in to disble this ad
hey guys. My bass has a rosewood fretboard that I'd like to change for something more exotic looking. Is it possible to remove and replace this wood, or is this all just a "pipe dream" so to speak.

Thanks guys.
BTW. Has anybody done this, and are there any recommendable shops that would be able to do this, if it was possible?

It could be done, but it would cost you-a lot. I would just get another neck from Warmoth if it's a bolt on that fits the neck pocket. They'll accopmodate more exotic species for fingerboards. I'm assuming you're doing this strictly for looks. The sound difference will not be all that great. Replacing the neck would be cheaper if it can be done with your bass.

Just so you have an idea what it takes: ProjectGuitar-Fretboard removal. ProjectGuitar-Attaching a fretboard.

What a luthier charge for fretboard replacement on average? TIA

In Montana they have signs over bars that say,"Before engaging your mouth, make sure your mind is in gear!"

Replacing a fingerboard is major surgery. The work to be done includes removing the existing fingerboard, creating a new one, glueing the new one in place, installing frets, dressing the frets, and performing a set up. Expect to pay $300 USD plus materials. If you want to round the fingerboard edges or something special in the way of side dots or decorative inlay bring your gold card.
