Changing necks. Info needed plz.

Hey guys,

I want to change the neck on my bass and there are a few questions I need answered.

So first, my bass is a 20 fret jazz bass and he width at the 20th fret is 2 5/8''. I wanted to change for the perfect looking neck but it's a 21 fret neck and width at heel is 2 21/32'' (as written on the website ... if you ask me... it's pretty much 5/8''). This said, would it change anything if I put the new neck on given it's adjusted properly?

I don't think I'd hae any problem the scale is said to be 34'' for both but just more fret for one... I'm guessing changing the intonation o the bridge will cover any problems right?

Thx in advance guys always a good help.

Basstrip,

Is the new neck a replacement designed for your Jazz?

It sounds like you'd be ok with the heel fitting the pocket of YOUR bass (1/32 is pretty negligible)... , but you'd need to measure from your saddles to the new nut and end up with 34".. Or you could measure from saddles to 12th fret and see if you had 1/2 or 17"..
If not, you'll need to move and remount your bridge for things to work right.

Does the new neck already have predrilled mounting holes that perfectly lineup with the existing ones on your bass, or will you have to drill those to fit??

I'm no expert, but changing out a neck can be complicated and needs to be precisely aligned. These are just a few of the measurements you need to be sure of before attempting this..

Mag...

That depends on what the 21 fret neck is. Some just have an extra fret tacked on an overhang at the end of the fingerboard so bridge placement wouldn't need to change. How about letting us know which brand it is?

The Warmoth site gives the neck pocket dimensions for their necks and they are compatible to Fender neck pockets. Do a careful measurement and you'll get a good idea. I've replaced a number of necks and there's not a lot of work involved if you're handy with tools and know how to use them and know the basics of doing a good setup after.

If the mounting screw holes are already drilled and they don't line up exactly with the body, they have to be plugged and redrilled with the neck temporarily held in place. If there are no holes drilled you'll have to drill them. Then you may need to use a shim to get the neck angle right.

All these replacement necks vary slightly in dimensions but most can be made to work with a little bit of effort.
