Changing String Spacing?

Sign in to disble this ad
As you may remember from an earlier post, I got hold of a Schaller 5 roller bridge for virtually nothing. I've got a repair part on the way and I'll be good to go. I'll be installing the component on a Status Energy which has a stock 18 mm spacing.

Now the Schaller has a max 16.5 - 17 mm spacing even with a full saddle "spread". My fingers are comfortable with the slightly tighter spacing but I'm concerned as to whether it will adversely affect the perceived action (given the neck width remains constant).

Any comments?

Thanks

I don't think there will be a problem with the action. By moving the strings slightly closer at the bridge, the string vibration should be more 'in line' with the neck. So I don't see it causing a problem with action.

More of a concern for me with a string spacing change would be how the strings line up over the pickup pole pieces, especially on the two outer strings at the bridge pickup (if you have one). You could end up with a slightly weaker sound from the G and B strings, if the string path no longer goes directly over the pole pieces.

Depends on your particular bass and pickups as to whether you will notice any difference I think.
