changing string spacing

Sign in to disble this ad
so i have this p-bass which is around 19mm at the bridge and I think I prefer something a little closer together. the bridge is a standard p-bass type without any adjustment as far as spacing goes, i think.
I mean there are these grooves on the saddle, and I guess they would change the spacing, but not sure if that is what they are for.
Is that what those little grooves are for?

my other question is would it be better to get a bridge that has adjustable spacing so I can find what i like or just get a fixed width?
and how do adjustable bridges work per se?
Like if you move the A string so that it is closer to the E string, you are essentially moving the A away from the D string right? so you would need to compensate for that. so if you move all the strings so they are essentially as close to the previous string as possible won't you have a big space on the fretboard? also what about the pickup poles alignment?

wow i just realized how much i don't understand about this subject.
sorry for the questions, especially if they are common sense type things.

The grooves on the plate are saddle adjustment screw guides.
Fender has a grooved saddle that will do what you want. You would want to start with the center strings A D. Set their spacing first and then move the outside strings to match the AD spacing.
