Changing strings on my acoustic

Sign in to disble this ad
I am having trouble getting the pins out of my acoustic bass to change the strings. I have a pair of pliers, i padded the ends so i wouldn't mess up the pins but they just wont come out, they are however coming somewhat out, but not enough to let the sting go. any ideas?

If you've loosened the strings all the way, and you can't get the pegs out with a proper tool, and can't push them up from the inside, you can try putting a bit of lemon oil down in the holes to lubricate them to get them out. Just a little bit should lubricate it enough to get it to pull. Whatever you do, don't force it.

Also, after detuning the strings slide the ball ends down into the bridge next to the pins - they're wedged.

Hi.

Don't know if there's such a tool for the bass pins, but for acoustic guitars there's a combined winder/pin extractor. You might want to explore that option.

Prior using that tool I used side cutters to pry the pin up. That can score a soft bridge though, so be careful.

Also installing the new strings can be a bit challenging at first, the ends don't seat well and the pins tend to lift up. Bending the end of the string helps a mile.

Regards
Sam
