Cheap, quick and effective mod for '51 style P bass/early Tele bass

If this has been thought of before, sorry for rehashing it.

I don't like resting my thumb directly on the pickup coil on this style bass. I fear it would eventually damage the windings, even though its covered with the cloth wrap that they cover the windings with. Also, its not all that comfortable with that ridge from the top plate sticking out. So, I cut the end off of a Dimarzio Stratocaster pickup cover and smoothed down the cut with sandpaper. It fits perfectly over the end of the bass pickup, and is held in place by the pickup height adjustment screw. A much more comfortable thumb rest IMO, and it protects the pickup too. Of course, this one will be painted black (all I had was a cream-colored cover). When black it would be practically invisible.

I say leave it cream colored. The paint will wear, eventually anyway.

Very bright solution. I've been trying to think up a fix myself for my 56 clone. This looks like a good one.
