choked frets on the G

Sign in to disble this ad
I am having a problem with choked frets on the G string of my Jazz bass. It seems that from about the 13th to the 19th fret it just chokes the note so you cannot even make out what it is it is just buzz. It is more pronounced now that I have changed strings but it was quite obvious with the last set of strings. This only seems to be on the G, there is slight buzzing on the other strings but nothing like this.

The relief doesn't seem like it is too much, but the string saddles are basically as high as they can go. Is the answer to flatten out the neck a bit?

DC, have you had a guitar tech look at the neck? I sometimes need to have my frets milled or just a set up will get my bass back in shape.

Not yet, I don't actually have one really
I try and do everything myself.. but if I try everything and it doesn't go away I will have do what you suggest and take it to my local shop.
Its always worth trying to save $50 or so on a setup, that could buy like 2 and a 1/2 lessons (30 minute ones) which is what I want to invest it There is nothing else wrong with it too, it plays great except for that damn buzz on the G.

Yeah, I know the feeling. But I do find a good tech, and let then set up my bass. This is usually good for a year or so and then I do it again. I do travel a lot and that does cause the bass to change. If you can do the work yourself that is cool. I was never able to get the bass feeling as good as my tech though.

Have you changed guages of strings. Or are you playing with a lighter set then before? This could cause problems with the neck.

Search the web and see if you can find set up instructions and follow them in order. Or if anyone out there could provide some insight on this subject.

Yeah I might have to do it after all. I changed the original strings which were flatwounds to roundwounds so that loosened the tension a bit but the buzz was already evident before I changed strings so now its just worse with lighter tension

I will check out the fender setup instructions, that's a good idea. Usually I just wing it in terms of setup and it works

There's not much point in getting lessons for an instrument that's unplayable anyway

I would at very least get a tech to look at it.

well its my second bass so thats not a problem, and it is 100% playable except for those frets but I know what you mean It seems the best option is taking it to a tech, they may as well set it up to Fender specs while they are at it. Problem solvered unless someone has any ideas on fixing it without seeing a tech
