Choosing a metal file.....

Sign in to disble this ad
I need to file down the groove where my B string is held at the base, it is too wide to accomodate the non-tapered string I use.

What would be a good file set to get/place to get it? Would something like this work?

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...key=THDSiteMap

Also any other considerations I should use when filing, other than possibly removing the base from the instrument before filing on it?

Thanks!

Can you clarify what it is you are describing? or post a pic. I assume you're describing the bridge saddle and not the nut near the headstock.

If you have no experience doing this don't be salty if you cut the slot crooked or too deep. Search Talkbass for 'bridge saddle slot filing'.
Other considerations would be to take it to a pro repairman. An experienced repairman's cost should be less than the your time + cost of the files and/or a new expensive bridge. This is quick repair, the turn around time should be less than an hour. In addition, you minimalize the risk of damaging your instrument.

The correct tools:

Pics here.

Is my Jerry-rigging at the bridge affecting my sound/tone?
Not sure how I could cut it too deep......but then again that's probably HOW I could cut it too deep.

Constantly getting quoted at $50+ for the filing, rather just do it myself at that rate.

Thanks for the info

All the files in the link you cited are too large. It appears that you need a very small diameter round file that will fit inside the bridge slot...and put plenty of tape on the body finish to avoid damaging it.

The pics helped immensely towards understanding what your first post was describing. The repair quotes of $50 are reasonable a price since it is a two-piece bridge sytem (tail piece) it requires more work time.

IMPORTANT.
This issue has been discussed for 20 yrs. I suggest that you read this Warwick forum thread. Click-on the link below scroll down a little pass the Warwick forum notice.
