Cool CIJ PBass Neck on a Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I have a lovely Japanese Precision neck that I want to place on a Fender or Squier Jazz body. It has a Q serial number which I think dates it around 2002 - 2004. Basically, I find the Jazz necks are not wide enough at the nut for me.

I need to know whether this neck will be a direct replacement on either a Fender or Squier Jazz body that is made in USA, Mexico, China, Indonesia, Korea...obviously it should directly replace okay on a Japanese body.

I tried it on a Monterey body and found the neck pocket was much deeper and had to shim the neck a considerable amount. The width was acceptable. But I do not want to have to wedge\shim this neck to fit a Jazz body. I want to buy the body and directly replace the neck (if it has one of course)

Any assistance or thoughts appreciated thanks.

My experience with CIJ necks is that the screw hole pattern is slightly off from MIM or MIA bodies (and vice versa). If I remember correctly, it's like 1/16" offset. Not a huge deal to work around this if you don't mind filling holes and redrilling.

Depth is another issue, but as you noted, shims can take that out. Again, if I remember correctly, the depth wasn't a problem going from a Japanese neck to a MIA or MIM, but the screw holes were.

Hope this helps (and I am remembering correctly).

Ah - that is very useful information Slyjoe - many thanks. I have had other recommendations not to go with MIM and MIA bodies for CIJ necks, so I will rule them out for now.

So this will leave the Asian manufacturers - anyone have any thoughts on body\neck match-ups?

Actually, I really like the CIJ neck I have on a MIM jazz body. The small frets and finish work is very well done. Didn't mean to discourage you away from them. Width and depth were fine as well.

Never had a Squire.

Thanks Slyjoe - no problem. Interesting to hear you have a CIJ neck on a MIM body. Yes the craftsmanship on the necks is excellent, and no I am not discouraged from the MIM or MIA bodies at all - just gathering information, and you have been most helpful thanks.

might not help but you never know

Hiya,

For what it's worth I used to do a neck swap on a MIJ Jazz body between a MIJ neck and a '77 fretless P neck depending on what I would be playing for a while. I had to do a setup each time of course because of the different radius and string height but they were a bolt up.

To anyone interested - I bought a new Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz (Made in Indonesia) today - man that is a nice bass and the neck is so smooth (ebenol fingerboard I believe). But I removed the neck and put my MIJ Precision neck on it and...it fitted with no drama! Yay!! I quickly replaced the bridge with a BA II and replaced the stock strings with flatwounds. Now I have a most delicious Jazz with a fretted Precision neck, and can swap it over anytime with the fretless Squier Jazz neck too. Just what I wanted.
Many thanks for the replies - they were most helpful.
