Thumbs down The Classic A string rattle on Fender Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I just put new strings on my Jazz and I have a rattle in the NUT only on the A string. This is because the angle of the A string after the nut is very small (the string is almost straight). And it rattles when I pluck hard... You know what I'm talking about...
I need to get the angle bigger, but how? I should put more string wraps on the tuning peg, but they are already cut for 2 wraps...
Is there any other solution? Or do I have to buy another string tree for the A string?
How do you solve this problem?

Thank you.

P.S. Please tell me if you don't get the problem.

Yes it's a well known issue with a well known solution.
Just wrap the A string all the way down to the bottom of the peg... next time.

+1

You could change the string tree with one of these from HipShot. It will hold down the A, D and G string.

Thanx Jazz Ad and Nino.
Maybe I'll buy a Hipshot string tree.
The bad thing is that my pegs are not straight, the have a "pit", groove...

Look:

And I can't wrap it down properly...

The Classic A string rattle Fender Jazz

I have the same problem on a 62 precision bass, I get round it by buying an extra long scale A string. I dont want to drill holes in a vintage instrument and this works.

Yep. I've had this problem before. The easy fix is to wrap the A string as low down on the peg as possible.

Just loosen the string a little, push the wrap down with your thumbnail, and tighten it back up.

I put vintage style Gotoh tuners on mine---The barrells are straight , and you can wind the string all the way down to the headstock.. the plates on the back are larger too-adding more mass to the headstock, I think it makes the bass sound better.

I played a new Sadowsky Metro last week that had the same problem - you'd think that such an expensive copy wouldn't also copy the design mistakes!

the thumbnail trick is great, but it wont work with those tuners if it is already cut too short. As stupid as it sounds, you can wrap the string backwards on the peg until you are ready to change strings again. It will give it a better angle for the time being, but it will look dumb

Don't waste your time or money on another string tree. Just cut the string longer next time and wrap properly. Problem solved.

I bought a second fender tree and drilled it in between the A and D strings on my MIM Jazz. hideous but effective!
