Classic Vibe Jazz Bass Problem: Please help

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, due to my Classic Vibe Jazz needing frequent neck adjustments (most unstable neck I've ever owned) it seems that I have stripped the truss rod nut (lucky, not the truss rod itself).

So how badly am I screwed? Can it be repaired? And if so, how much should it cost?

StewMac sells fender-style truss rod nuts, from under $3 to about $5.

And if you stripped the nut, you may be leaning on it awfully hard. Might need to use a washer or two to shim it.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Update: Took my bass to a tech, and he was able to turn the nut using a tapered truss rod wrench from StewMac (the "Gripper", I think). Going to order one for myself, and maybe a truss rod nut too, just in case.

Consult with that tech and see if the gripper is necessary, and if so is it a band aid on a bullet wound? (meaning is it going to fix the problem or will the nut get worse. And while you are at it, how much to just repair/replace the silly nut?

And then ask about the neck. My CV and my VM are very stable necks.

Don't ask me, I'm still trying to find the #@$#& "trust rod" on a bass!

I would hesitate to use the phrase "very good bassist" in any association with my name

I'm gonna try to replace the nut myself eventually. From what I've read here on TB it's a relatively simple task.

As for the neck, it does seem to have settled down. It was probably just the extreme hot/cold weather that was causing it to shift so much.
