| Cleaning Fretboard - best method / materials

I know the great James Jamerson said that "dirt keeps the funk", but my 78 P-Bass board has gotten a little too funky.
It's a maple fingerboard with the gloss finish, typical of that era.
I'm assuming you just take off the strings, get an old toothbrush and go to it but I'm wondering what type of solution is best to use for max cleaning and to avoid damaging the wood or frets. I'm all about organic (and saving $$), so if someone can give me a recipe that uses common household materials vs. some toxic, overpriced branded spray bottle stuff, that would be even better.
Thanks in advance.
