Cleaning Fretboard and Frets

Sign in to disble this ad
I've searched, and read through some of the posts on this. I have an ebony fretboard, with just some general grime on it, and the frets have some stuff on them too, not bad really, but not bright. So basically, I use some Lemon Essential Oil with a toothbrush to clean the fretboard, right? Will the same work on the frets, or do I need to use something else? When I'm done with that, do I have to treat the fretboard with anything, or does the Lemon Essential Oil also treat it? Thanks.

Pledge Orange oil wipes to clean, then lemon oil or Hoppe's No9 oil to condition.

I find for frets that Brasso works perfectly. Be sure to mask off both sides of the fret with masking tape - I use two layers of it.

To save time, I use the same masking tape and move it down from fret to fret as I reach the bottom of the neck.

Vinegar, dilluted with water works quite well, just to suggest a cheaper alternative. It's actually what's used to clean more delicate wood floors. I just cleaned up an antique acoustic guitar today, and that cleaned all the dust and grime right off the fretboard.
