Wax isn't a good cleaner. I've found that wiping it down with a damp cloth and maybe a bit of mild dishwashing liquid first gets the gunk off. If you use a wax after cleaning, get a paste wax made for furniture, not for floors. The floor stuff is too hard to polish by hand. Buff the paste wax with a soft cotton cloth. The wax will last a very long time and all you have to do is wipe it down with a clean cloth from time to time.
I don't recommend any of the expensive guitar polishes sold in the music stores. Some of them work okay but are a waste of money when you can get better cleaning and protection using simpler products.
Avoid the spray waxes, like Pledge, that contain silicone.
