Cleaning tuning pegs

Hi,

I've noticed in the last while that there's a collection of dirt or something building up on my tuning pegs - it's left them kind of "freckled" and there's a small amount of green gunk that comes off too.

Can anyone recommended a way to; a) clean them and b) coat them with something to stop this happening in future?
