Cleaning Vintage Hardware

Hi There! I just picked up a 64 Danelectro Silvertone and the hardware is covered in rust. I've never owned a vintage bass, and I was wondering how to clean it. I guess my real question is: if I get rid of the rust, will the whole thing fall apart? I've always wanted an old Silvertone, and I'd hate to mess it up. Thanks for any advice ...
