Coloured Pickup Covers

Sign in to disble this ad
Before anyone flames me for this, I have checked past posts to see if anyone could answer this question. But the responses were lackluster...

I'm looking to swap out the standard black P and J bass pickup covers on my Fender P-bass deluxe. I'm looking to put on purple pickup or orange to add some colour (think Ibanez JEM electric). So:
  • who (person/company) makes custom coloured pickup covers? Links would be helpful
  • whether anyone has had any success spray painting their own?

I'd appreciate any help.

It should be fairly simple to pull the covers and paint them with any of the millions ( and millions )
of colors available for plastic models from your friendly local hobby shop.

I would google chrome plating in your area and find a shop that does it.

Spray painting over chrome isn't likely to work - it will probably start flaking and peeling as soon as anything contacts it.

You MIGHT get paint to stick if you took 100-grit sandpaper and sanded the cover all over to get some texture on the surface. You may still need a primer coat before putting a color coat on it. If it doesn't work, you'll end up discarding the cover because it's all scratched up...but that's not a major financial loss.

The other option that occurs to me is having it powder-coated by a business that provides that service. You'd want to check with them for information about surface prep and colors available.

I've seen chrome over plastic before, but I don't think it is something one can do at home...

If you shop around you can probably find some.

Awesome suggestion. I just found out that the alternative to that is to pick up vinyl dye used for plastic car dashboards et al. as well.

Thanks everyone.
