Compound radius fingerboard sanding - ebonol

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. I have an MTD Kingston Heir fretless 5 with an ebonol fingerboard. I am currently doing a setup and would like to polish the fingerboard while I'm at it. The fret markers are a touch higher than the rest of the board, and I just want to level it all off and shine it up. Anyone have any suggestions? Here's what Mike Tobais said:

"I use a flat block about 4" long and 2.5 wide to back the paper start with 600 and go up to 1000 or 1200. Finish off with 0000 steel wool and maybe a few drops of lemon oil.

The radius is compound. 10/14"

I'm guessing this is something that is just a slow and steady process and done by look and feel. I figure to use just a light, smooth sanding action to flatten out the fret bumps, while keeping the compound radius in tact.

I've never done anything like this before, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I just did it. Came out well. I used the 600 grit sandpaper with a flat block - very light touch. I didn't have access to finer paper, so I went to 000 steel wool, and then 0000 steel wool. Did this process twice. Lemon oil to finish it off.

There's a little bit of evidence of the 600 grit, and probably could've been taken care of with finer paper. Otherwise came out great. The fretline bumps are just about gone. I doubt I changed the radius, if at all. I'd like to epoxy it one day, anyways.
