Confused.

My friend has asked me to look over his bass for him he says he thinks he has an upbow. I know how to look for a bow in the neck, but there one thing I've always been confused on. I know a straight neck cannot be suitable for everyone and most bassehave a slight bow to the neck(relief), but I aslo know there is such thing as too much bow. So would it be easy to decipher too much bow, from a perfect amount. I've heard people say that the string will be high off the fret board, which makes sense, but my friend prefers a high action on his bass. Basically would I be able to tell too much relief from perfect relief and would I be able to tell a high action from having an upbow from an high action that has been set at the bridge?

Oh, and for the record I've always got mixed messages. Some people say you neck should be straight and some people say there should be a slight concave bow. I know mine has it.

I don't know what kind of bass your friend has, but the manufacturer should have some guidelines on their website to give you a good place to start. Bass-ically, you just hold the string down at the first and last frets and measure the height of the string from the eighth fret, or something like that. In the end, though, it's all about preference. Some folk like a straight neck, some like a little curve. Hope that helped.
