Confused about fixing sharp frets

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an American Fender P bass that seemed to have developed some sharp fret ends. I emailed a guitar shop that isn't too far from me and asked them about it and they sent me a message back telling me to take it to a shop that is too far away for me to go unless they can do it right there while I wait. The original shop that I contacted is a "Authorized Fender Repair Center" and I figured if anybody could do it they could. Is it that hard to do because I thought about ordering a fret file and doing it myself. I don't want to damage my prized p, but I don't want to make such a long trip to get it done. The ends aren't real bad and I can live with it if I have to but I am slightly confused as to why a Fender Repair Center can't do this job

Just because they're a Fender repair center doesn't mean they're luthiers. They might just work on amplifiers.

Where do you live? Check the phone book for other guitar shops closer to you.

Your guitar is getting dry. Try humidifying it for 2 weeks and the problem will go away. Really. If you don't the problem can get worse, to the point that the frets pop out of the fretboard.

Also that kind of fret work repair might be better done at some other shop with someone more experienced in fret leveling etc etc then the guy at the fender authorized shop. Check to see if a local shop, even small one, has a good repair tech with experience doing that kind of fretwork. He may simply round the sharp part off and humidify the neck. Fender repair shop may not have someone who does any such work. That fender auth shop may only do basic things to include replaceing necks instead of fixing them.
