Converting a 5 String to a 4 String

Sign in to disble this ad
In the following weeks a good friend of mine is supposed to give one of his old basses, now the problem is he plays a 5 string and I want to play a 4 string, thus I was considering changing it to a four string. So I ask of you experts, how would I got about doing so?

Take off the 'B' string?

Seriously, it's probably not worth converting - especially depending on the type of pickups (poles that line up with the strings...) - you may be looking at a new nut, bridge, and pickups. If it's a cheapy, it's prob not worth putting that much into it, and if it's a more expensive bass, you'd prob be better off selling it and buying a 4-banger.

Just use the B string as a thumb rest.

^ This. Or, become a supporting member of TB and put the 5 string up for trade for a 4 string in the classifieds.

DON'T DO IT!

I saw a 6 string bass at a guitar shop that someone had tried to make into a 5 by changing the bridge and replacing the nut... it was a horrible abortion. It was a cheapie to start with but they made it far worse by their failed attempt at converting it to 5.

The strings were going at crazy angles to the tuning gears and there was one extra hole in the headstock with the tuner removed so they put in some cheesy rhinestone. In short, it was a total disaster. DON'T BE THAT GUY!
