Copper shielding tape

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got done putting my bass together last night and plugged it in to play. There's a huge amount of buzz when I turn the blend up. A friend told me about using copper shielding tape around the pickups to eliminate the buzz. Would this really help? If so, how would I apply the tape around the pickups? Also, could it be something else that is causing the buzz...maybe bad soldering??? I didn't have much soldering metal to work with so it's pretty thin.

BTW I did read the "Aluminum shielding tape" thread and it would help if someone explains how to apply the tape. Pics would be helpful.

Lay the bass down on a sheet of aluminum foil. Connect an aligator clip with wire to the foil and the other end to a metal piece of the bass. If it stops buzzing when plugged in, then you have a grounding/shielding problem. The copper tape will help and there's a great thread here about how to shield a bass.

Copper shielding tape

I just picked these up off of eBay for $18.50 shipped. Would they work you think?

There is an adhesive copper tape used for keeping slugs out of your garden. I believe the name is SureKill. A roll ($8) is enough for a few guitars. It can be found at garden supply stores. It sticks well and burnishes nicely.

The stuff you bought will work...if it's copper tape. The only thing is that it looks a little narrow...which is good for some places in the cavities but sometimes you want a wider piece so you don't have so much taping and connecting to do. The narrow stuff works just may take more time.

Well if it doesn't work, I'll just have to give the seller a "negative" feedback. That's what eBay is all about right? Definitely will look into those SureKill stuff. Thanks for the tip!

No, that's NOT what ebay is all about! If what you bought is copper tape and there was a clear description of the size, don't blame the seller for your own lack of knowledge. The tape will work if it's copper tape.

You should have asked here before you bid on it. $6,00 per roll is a fair price.

Play fair!!

I was just kidding. To be honest I've never given anyone a negative feedback.

What you want to look for is copper tape with a conductive adhesive, makes life easier!

I wonder if my safest bet on my P bass, it being vintage and all, is taking copper foil instead of shielding paint, as the copper foil can be removed later?
