Cort Artisan B4FL truss rod rattle

Sign in to disble this ad
Just picked up one of these and the truss rod rattles inside the neck, it plays very well and is set up well. Has anyone heard of this and is there something I can do? The truss rod is not loose. I thought it was one of the tuners but no.

I'm no luthier but if it truly is the trussrod, I would begin by loosening it off completely, giving it an opportunity to re-seat and tighten it back up and see what happens.

Thanks for the advice. I don't know what else it could be. It happens mostly when playing an open E, it seems to be in the neck, not bridge area and it doesn't stop when holding parts of the tuners. I had the neck off last night and if I shake the neck you can hear something inside!

See if rod will loosen off. Or if it is indeed tightened at all. Who knows what the po did to it. If the relief is flat, there may be no tension holding it in place. If that's the case you should try tightening it 1/4 turn past where first contact is made. It will add a touch of relief to the neck but not affect the current setup that much.

It may be broken, but my belief here is that a nut is going to take a lot of tightening before the rod breaks. It take a real goof to accomplish this but I know they're out there.

Another thought I had is the hole where the end of the rod passes and the adjustment nut is installed may be large enough that the rod slips one way or another enough that it contacts the wood in the channel.

I do find it odd that a neck would pass QC at the factory if the rod is set in in a position that this would ever happen. it's pretty simple task to visually determine if the rod is going to hit the sides of it's channel or the fretboard before closing it up.

Check the bridge springs. My cort did that, I thought truss, but it was loose springs on the bridge

Chappy, I've had that too, but he said he had the neck off and shaking it he heard something inside.

Sometimes the 'Elephant Ears' on the tuners go loose & cause a rattle at certain frequencies....

I'm a dope...

I swear I heard the rattle inside the neck but as I checked further it was in fact one of the tuners as was posted above. Thanks everyone and sorry to rattle everyone's cage.
Its a great bass by the way...
