Costs of fret end filing

Sign in to disble this ad
So, it looks my neck, out of nowhere, shrunk on me, so the fret edges are sticking out very slightly, not enough to cut, but enough to scrape my hand into discomfort.

How much would cost me to have a luthier slightly file down the fret edges? I live in Davis and Fremont, CA, depending on whether I'm in school or not, if anyone knows of a place with good rates.

You might try adding some humidity to the storage area - low humidity could easily be the cause. Might reverse itself...but it will take some time to do so.

This is something you could do yourself if you feel comfortable with it. Just take a flat file and run it along the edge of the neck. Then sand with graduating grits of sandpaper (start with 600) until it's smooth. Viola!

PlanetWaves makes an in-case humidifier as do a few other companies. Pretty common thing to happen in winter, especially if you have forced air heating. Maple necks tend to shrink more than rosewood. I had my frets files three years ago for less than $30. Since I bought the humidifier, no problems.
