Except you may find your self playing in certain areas of the strings because the covers get in the way that may impact your tone, but that's all. If you normally pluck the strings up by the neck, say, it will sound the same whether there are covers or not. On the other hand, if you normally pluck the strings right on top of the pickup, and then have to pluck them up by the neck, because the pickup cover is in the way, then you will get a different tone. So, whether or not the tone is different will depend on how you adapt your playing style because of the covers, and not because the covers themselves are altering the signal.
Do that make any sense?

Do that make any sense? | I had a cover over the pickups on my P, and this is the reason I took it off. I found myself playing down by the bridge all the time, which gave me a more trebly tone. Now I play more directly over the pickups, so I think my tone is more like a true P-Bass tone. But it sure looked good with the pickup cover on!

On my VM P-bass I only have the bridge cover on for that same reason, on P-basses I lke to play right over the p'up because it feels comfortable and that's where I get the best tone on that bass. BUT, on my VM Jazz that has both covers, I have no problem playing up by the end of the neck, and I like the tone I get playing that way on that particular bass.
Go figure.
