crud removal

Sign in to disble this ad

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have a good suggestion on how to remove this nasty crud without damaging the finish? I think it's glue from the case it was kept in.
It's dry and hard, not gooey at all.
Please help save this otherwise very clean foundation.
Thanks

Looks like old tape glue mixed with rehearsal room dirt, yeah crud!

I'd try a bit of WD40 or similar on a cloth to soften it up, let it soak in for a minute, sparingly, works well on all tar-like gluey bits. Just take it bit by bit.

That or alcohol, meths, vodka, surgical, whatever.

Do they make "Goo Gone" but a non-abrasive version? I have used it on car paint to get rid of the gunk left behind from emblems, but never on a bass...

I always start with a damp cloth and work my way up. Does it scratch off with your fingernail?

Naphtha.

The glue should easily dissolve with this stuff.

I got some goo gone, like the idea of the citrus. If that doesn't work, naphtha is next.

Naptha will disolve the finish and should never be used on guitars!

Wear gloves with that citrus stuff. It always seems to dry my finger tips out to the point of cracking.

Naphtha is awesome stuff. It doesn't harm Nitro, or Conversion Varnish.

Sorry, thought naptha was paint-thinner. Looked it up, paraffin, lighter fluid is what it is.

Anyway I'd love to see the cleaned up article!

Just remember the Citrus based stuff CAN be pretty strong & Dangerous to eyes etc...

Just coz it's "fruit based" don't mean it's edible :-)
