I think this is a long shot but does anyone know of a company that makes a neck to fit an early 80s 4 string yamaha p style bass? It has regular fender neck pocket width of 2.5in and neck pocket depth of .75in but the length from the bottom of the pocket to the top of the pocket is 4.4in.

Is the length of the pocket a problem or will a standard fender size neck still fit?

In short, no. If it's not made by Fender or Gibson, mass-produced parts do not exist for it.

However, there's a lutherie forum with many skilled guys who could build you the neck for less than $300.

Well the fender necks and neck pockets have the same dimensions, just the length of the pocket is a bit longer. I wasnt sure if that made much of a difference. I guess id need to know how big the flat surface is on the back of a fender necks heal area. I dont care so much that i find an actul official replacment part. Id really just like to know if a fender neck will fit even though the pocket is longer.

I can't verify, but you'd only need to have a flat surface long enough to hold the screws. 4" might be a bit of a stretch.

Yeah, i know. We need a fender owner to chime in here. lol

I wouldnt mind getting a neck made but it would save me time and money to just buy one that will fit.

The neck starts being rounded at 4" from the end of a fender neck.

That said, you could probably get by with it but the neck pocket will "stick out" for the last 0.4".

go for it, im sure you could cut a little block to fill the gap if you want too

if you're confident in your woodworking skills it would probably be best to cut a piece that would allow you to really butt the neck up against the new false 'end' of the pocket

na mean?

You have to worry about changing scale length as well.

Where a replacement neck fits in the pocket can't be moved around

I actually checked tonight and a precision neck will fit without it looking akward. Thanks for the input guys.
