Question Custom Tuning a 5 string

Sign in to disble this ad
Im a big fan of CGCF tuning, and I was just wondering can my B string go up a step to C or should I just Down tune my EADG strings, my bass is a 34" scale so the B string is somewhat floppy, my strings are daddario regular lights 130,100,90?,45 I think, thanks for the help in advanced.

Forgive my ignorance here, but since you already have access to all of the notes in the CGCF tuning, why would you want to alter the tuning on the 5er?

I like a .125 to .130 range for a B.

I find a BEADG tuning works quite well for a 5 string. I have tried all 5 stings down 1/2 step and also ADGCF. I find BEADG works for 98% of what I want to play.

Dont I need a capo at the first fret to make all the notes C tuning, or can I just play everything a fret down and it would be the same as if I played it in a normal string tuned to C ?????

yes, you may tune your B string up to a C if you want to. sounds like it wont hurt. and it would certainly be easier than tuning E-G down all that way, and then having a B string to trip over.

now gedatta my sight.

I was recruited to a death metal band that played a couple songs in drop C tuning and most in D standard. They handed me mp3's of the songs and stacks of tabs for their guitars, I spent the next week re-tabbing them in BEADGC tuning. Now they're jealous that they have to switch axes between songs and I dont.

I know Devin Townsend tuned all his guitars CGCGCE, so the relative bass would be CGCG (CGCGC), and it sounds awesome!!

Just get aset of light guage strings, tune as above with the low B tuned to C instead and you wil be ready to ROCK!
