D string has an annoying twang

Sign in to disble this ad
My MIM P-bass is set up very nicely, and the action is right where it's supposed to be. But for reasons unknown to me, the D string has this annoying metallic 'twang' which is especially noticeable when plucked openly, and although less noticeable when fretted, it's still there. (FWIW, I use GHS Boomers in medium 45/65/85/105)

The string appears to be securely situated in the nut and under the string tree, and the bridge saddle doesn't have any 'play' in it either. But something must be loose (I'm guessing) because this sound is not heard on the E or A, and only very slightly on the G.

Any suggestions?

Could be the string. Remove it and restring it, being careful not to let it get twisted. Or try another string, even an old worn out one if necessary.
