Angry dead G string?

Sign in to disble this ad
After doing a routine string change on my secondary P-bass (by "routine" I basically mean yearly), I found my G string to be thoroughly dead between the 3rd-15th fret. I tune low (B-E-A-D), use heavy-gauge strings to keep the tension up, like my action to be pretty damn high and use the same brand/guage strings all the time. I don't wast to start messing with my truss rod too much, as my bass was perfect before I changed strings and I always change only one string at a time.

What would cause this?

A ****** bass.....
Try messing with the truss rod. It's always undoable. Unless you're a moron, and crank it too far in the wrong direction...
Also try raising the string's saddle slightly.

Well... based on what you've told us, I'd have to say you've put a bad G string on your bass...heard bad G strings... just never saw one Yeah, I know, it's a new string... but it does happen from time to time and I think that's what happened to you. A simple test would be to replace this G string with either the old string you took off or another new one... then report back here if it was indeed the string.

Yeah, kinda has to be a bad string, doesn't it? Do you have the old one still? Put it back and see what happens.

I dunno. Sounds more like you have a dampening problem or a pickup distance issue. Unless your neck is warped or you have an action problem, all that messing with your truss rod is going to do is compound the problem. Try adjusting your pickup height.

I've had NEW dead strings before.
Sounds like the issue to me perfectly.
Change it back to confirm.
