Dead G string, whats the culprit?

Sign in to disble this ad
So the G string on my fretless SX jazz bass is pretty much dead sounding. Not every single note, but the majority of the notes sound muted and dont ring out a bit. I have tried almost everything such as, new bridge, nut, strings, adjusting pickup height, adjusting saddles different ways, installing threaded inserts in my neck, and to no avail, my G string is still lifeless. The only thing i have not tried is fat finger, but before i go out and buy one of those, lets hear some more recomendations.

It sounds like you've tried pretty much everything I'd try if I had that problem.

Before you drop any money on a Fat finger, try clamping a 2 1/2" C clamp on the headstock. See if the added mass changes anything. The fact that the dead notes appear on different notes is puzzling. Usually it'll just be one note that's dead.

Also check to make sure your fingerboard is flat and doesn't have a bunch of dips ground in to it on the G string side.

It may be tough to find a similar fretless SX bass near you that you can try to see if there's a difference between yours and another one.

Beyond that, go around and try a few other brands of basses and see if that helps.

There can be a big difference in the sound of different brands of strings, and string guage can have a lot to do with it. You can play around with that too.

But honestly, it's an SX, and I don't think I'd want to put much money into uprgrading it. When it comes to reselling or trading it, you won't get your money back.

What's it sound like through a different amp?

Have you tried adjusting the truss rod your problem might be a back bow in the neck. wich result in the strings hitting the upper frets when you fret a note.

I agree with this for the most part. If I where you I would set the neck dead flat and check for imperfections on the surface of the board. Any minor bump could be the culprit since it will act as a mute.
