Dead Low B on a fretless 6

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry, I already posted this in the Basses forum, but realized it was probably better suited here. I recently purchased a Brice HXB Six string fretless. Overall, I love it, but the low B is all but useless. It had no sustain, was muted, and generally dead. (I have two other basses with a low B, just as comparison) I told Kurt at rondomusic and he sent me a new box of strings, which didn't fix anything. I sent it back to rondomusic for a replacement, which came, and suffers the same problem. Fretting it anywhere, at all, produces a dead/muffled/sustainless/sad tone. It isn't a matter of the pickups, it's really just that the bass isn't producing the tone. Oddly enough, I found that if I tune the low B a fourth up to E, it works perfectly. It has "Indie" strings on it, and the low B is an "Indie" Flatwound .135. If anybody has any idea what would cause this, please let me know. I'd hate to have to send it back, otherwise I love it. I can't figure out what the meaning is with that B, if it's a tension problem or what? Different strings? Truss rod adjustment? No idea what I need to do to fix it, but if anybody can help me I'd be enormously appreciative.

My Brice V2 had the same problem when I tried Carvin flatwound strings on it. It was uncanny how much the "B" string notes just died when I played them. Especially the "F", the 6th note from the nut. I cured the problem on my bass with LaBella Nylon Tapewound strings.

Man i ahve the EXACT same problem, had the bass for a week and haven't been able to find anyone who knows, tomorrow i'm going to sit down with the thing and completely set it up, truss rod, string height, intonation.
I would send it back but as i live in New Zealand it costs a fair bit to send and takes a while.
