Dead Spot on 16th fret?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm not sure if this is what you guys refer to as a dead spot (being this is the first time its happened, although I imagined dead spots would just produce no sound) but whenever I try and hit a G# on the E string on the 16th fret there's a major buzzing (no because I'm not pushing the string down enough either) and it basically blocks out the note. Every single other fret works fine except this one...any quick fixes? Do I need new strings, etc? (I know I can just play it on the 11th fret of the A string, but that involves moving position too). Thanks for any help you can give!

That's not actually a dead spot. You likely have a rise at the end of your fingerboard (like a ski jump) or a high fret. Look at the 17th fret and see if the fret is completely seated. If it is then the quick fix is to raise the action slightly or pay a visit to your local tech/luthier for a proper diagnosis.

Upon further inspection I found a dent where the 16th fret is on the string which I'm pretty sure is the cause
