"dead spot" on a neck

Sign in to disble this ad
My Squier P-Bass has developed a dead spot on the neck, specifically on the G string, 7th fret. That spot has a very noticeable lack of volume compared to anywhere else, and the frets leading to and from it are a bit quiter than anywhere else. And it's only the G string, all other strings and frets are fine. I removed the foam muting I had under the bridge cover and that helped a bit, but not by much. So what causes these "dead spots"? Would new strings help? I don't think it's the fret (although I could be wrong) because there's no buzzing and the intonation is spot on.
