Dead String???

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a problem with my '77 Fender Precision Bass. I have just re-strung with Thomasik medium gauge jazz flatwounds, and the D string is almost completely dead whilst played open and on all frets. It sounds duller and is less responsive to play, it almost feels 'muted'. I have tried re-seating the string, with no improvement. My initial though was that it could be caused by the nut, as the previous set of strings were a slightly higher gauge, and the string does have a gap either side in the nut, but surely this would only make a difference to the tone of the string in the open position? Not when fretted? Or could it be a badly manufactured string? Or possibly a bridge / neck problem? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds like a classic bum string; that happens.
