"dead" strings on a rickenback

Sign in to disble this ad
On my rickenbacker 4003 the E string sounds sounds like it has deadspots on the whole string, and the A sounds half dead on all notes. I have checked all the major culprits, new strings, 3 winds on post, not twisted string, intonation, relief, i cannot figure out what is wrong for the life of me. The only thing i can think of that i havent tried is a fret leveling. Also the bridge in some parts doesnt sit flush on the body, theres nothing underneath it, it just is cast that way. Anyone have any other suggestions?

go to rickenbacker's website and search their forums. there are some suggestions on how to resolve the E string issue and 'bridge lift' is also addressed in several threads.

I recently bought a 4003 and I absolutely love it but I must say that the bridge is an absolute joke in every way. It looks great and vintage and all but the design sucked when it was new in the 1960's and it is absolutely unacceptable today. Put a Hipshot on there. I'm sure you will be much happier!

Agreed, the bridge is crazy. Its just a burdon to do anything with it. Although i do like the mute so i dont know if ile get the hipshot.
