Question Diameter of Fender Jazz Bass knob shaft

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

I did some changes on the electric department of my American Standard Jazz Bass V and I'm about to exchange the knobs as well. I ordered nice hipshot knobs... but guess what, they won't fit they are 6 mm in diameter. Now I'm wondering if anyone knows what diameter the shaft of a standard Fender pot has.

Are the volume and tone shafts the same or do they differ? How wide are they? I don't want to buy another set of wrong knobs

I tried to search the net and TB forums but didn't find the dimensions. The Fender website also doesn't tell you (in the parts listing).

Thanks!

Karol

My AS J has 1/4 inch (6.35mm) solid shaft.

Thanks Mongo! Perhaps I can try to enlarge the knob holes so they fit on the shaft... somehow

Question

While I'm at it, does anyone have experience with replacing the knobs on a Fender American Standard Jazz Bass? If so, can you point to any interesting knobs that I could consider?

Cheers,

Karol

A trick I learned here on TB: the plug on your instrument cable is 1/4 inch. Stick it in the old knobs, and see if it fits. If it does, they're 1/4 inch.

Hey, that's a great tip. Thanks Ed.

The problem I'm having is getting a new set of knobs. The resellers simply don't say what diameter the knobs have inside. So it's a blind shot more or less.

Maybe I'll just stick with the original knobs although I'd like to have something with more grip and size.

Typically, the knobs for Solid-Shaft pots are 1/4", and the knobs for Split-Shaft pots are 6 mm.
