different nut for very light strings needed?

Sign in to disble this ad
Dear Bass Community,
i recently switched to very light strings (30 - 85 Rotosound) on my Fender Jazz bass. I had to adjust the trust rod so that they don't rattle against the frets. When I looked at the strings on the nut I wondered if the grooves (or slots) in the nut were too wide for the light strings. This brought me to the above mentioned question: Do we need to adjust the nut or better the grooves (or slots) of the nut to the string diameter?
I guess in principle it shouldn't matter, as long as the string does not move in the groove (is that the right word? I am not a native speaker, but I do like "move in the groove" in this context)
What is your experience or advice?
Best regards
Proton

Over time the strings will cut a small groove into the bottom of the slot. If you elect to switch back to a standard set of strings that could eventually lead to replacing the nut. Ideally, a new nut should be installed. The string slots would be cut to the proper dimensions and depth for the extremely light string set.

Practically speaking, it will take a while for any wear to show up at the bottom of the slot. If the strings don't rattle and there are no other problems it will be o.k.

Choice is yours.
