Direct replacement for Fender bridges...

Sign in to disble this ad
I own an older generation fretless MIM Fender Jazz bass made in the year 2000, with same size pickups. I was planning on replacing the bridge, but I wanna make it easy. I was think of getting a direct replacement, which will let me use the same screw holes then the original bridge, meaning less work and a fully reversible mod.

Question number 1 : Are these older MIM Fender equiped with standard bridges, which "direct replacement" bridges would work with (as opposed to the issue you get when replacing pickups on those basses) ?

Question number 2 : The obvious when changing the bridge of a fretted Fender is a Badass II... good idea on a fretless ? I don't see the Badass used on fretless basses often... any other bridge would be better. My goal : enhance the sustain and mwahh

I just changed the bridges on both my MIM deluxe active jazz and MIM deluxe active P bass. I put a Badass II on the jazz, and a Gotoh on the P bass. I actually liked the stock bridge on the P, but I had the extra bridges laying around and figured I'd use them. The Badass is a direct replacement, but I didn't notice a big change in sustain. Soundwise it seems more focused and punchier. The gotoh on the P bass sounds warmer than the standard, but not a big difference. I had put the Badass on a fretless jazz I have but didn't like it for some reason. I would go with a Gotoh 201 if I were to change it out again though.
So question 1) Either of these bridges will work as a direct replacement.
Question 2) Like I mentioned, I just didn't like the feel of the Badass on the fretless. There's some other factors to consider though in terms of your goal such as strings, pickups ect.

BAII mod on a fretless

I've done this mod to my MIM fretless and it is a drop in replacement. I had to shim the neck quite a bit to get the action low enough. It may have added sustain but as far as mwah...I didn't notice. High mass bridges is something I mod on most of my basses. Good Luck
