Do the B and E Strings Have Less Mwah on Fretless?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Yamaha TRB 1005 fretless bass. I can get the perfect amount of mwah (for me) on the A, D and G strings.

The B and E strings are another matter. The relief and string height is right, I think, but those strings go from having no mwah at all (maybe a tiny bit on the E) to rattling unpleasantly against the fretboard.

Is there just less mwah on the fat strings? Who gets mwah on the B especially, and what is the secret?

Thanks.

I would assume that you need B & E strings with more tension, to get the balance better, I'd try a heavy guage of string.

I never considered different strings with different tension.

The bass currently has 45-125 Hi Beams (round core) on it. Should I go up a gauge, or can a switch to hex core strings (like Lo Riders in the same gauge) make the difference?

I suppose you could try Lo Riders, what scale is the bass, if its 34" I'd still want to go up a guage. But of course, every bass is different, and every player too.

It's 35" scale.

Hi Beams seem much more flexible than most; I think this is attributable to the round core. Maybe going hex is worth a try.

This sounds like a possibly expensive experiment....

This is true, I hate finding the right strings for a bass.
