Do Different Strings = truss rod adjustment???

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is the deal...I have an SX J with a P neck...adjusted perfectly (At least to me) with Ernie Ball Regular Slinky strings...I purchased a SX PJ and when it arrived I swapped to stock from the PJ (D'addario's I think) with the Slinky's from the J. Obviously, the PJ needed adjustment, but what I discovered was that the J was now TOO LOW. Like the tension of the strings (or lack there of) let the neck bow backwards...

Is this normal?? When you switch strings (types) does it change the neck?

I am gonna put on a new set of Slinky's (I like them) on the J, So I ahve not done anything to it.

Just curious.

Strings with higher tension pull more on the neck and give it a forward bow. If going to higher tension strings you should fell the strings get higher. Your relief has increased in this case.

If changing to lower tension strings, the tension will pull less. The action may feel lower, but the strings especially in the lower frets will buzz. Your relief has decreased in this case.

You typically adjust trussrod first to get proper relief. Then adjust saddle height to taste. See up top.

The EB strings are probably higher tension than the stock strings on the Rondos. Those are cheap strings and IME with one bass are low tension.

Thanks

OK thanks. That is what I thought. I have adjusted the truss rod (and the string height) on the J when I put the new strings on it. And got it to where I REALLY liked the neck and the way it played (just not the tone)...but when I changed the strings, the set up changed...so I was just curious as to whether or not it was the strings.

Thanks for answering my question.

DEFINITELY if you switch to a different brand, gauge or type. Even when changing strings and replacing them with identical ones, you should at least check you truss rod adjustment and intonation.
