do i have FRET WEAR?

Sign in to disble this ad
basically... i went in to get a set up on my Fender P Bass. the tech told me that i had some fret wear and that i needed to get some crazy fret job. on the first three frets, there are definately some marks (no severe dents or anything). naturally i went to another tech to get a second opinion. this guy tells me that i'm years away from needing any frert work on my bass. what do i do? how do i tell if i have significant fret wear?

If you needed a fret job, you'd know it. There would be huge divets in your frets, or they would be worn almost flat. Chances are the guy is trying to make you waste your money. You wouldnt need a fretjob on just 3 frets. If you do any, you usualy do all of them bc they wear pretty evenly (kind of). It is probably just a setup isssue.

If the instrument plays OK without a lot of string buzz while playing at the first three or four frets, then it doesn't need a fret job. Even if it does buzz on the lower frets, you MAY just need a setup.
