Do i need to adjust anything before travel by car?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have two basses and i am moving, about 7-8 hr drive, and i want to bring my basses, but i know that the possible temperature differences might mess with the wood so do i need to do anything like loosen the strings and the truss rod or shall i just leave them as they are?

They will just be in the boot of my car in their own soft gig bags.

I am a little worried about messing around with the truss rod as the nut looks slightly stripped so i dont want to loosen it only to find that i cant do it back up.

Thanks for any info,
Asa.

No. First, the only reason to loosen a truss rod when shipping an instrument is to prevent impact damage from spreading due to string tension. It was advice given for acoustic guitars decades ago. Has nothing to do with temperature nor humidity. It was if the airline cracked the top, the string tension might cause more damage. But if you loosen the strings for any extended period, then you MUST loosen the truss rod too. The rod is there to balance the strings so loosening one means you need to loosen the other.

For a drive as short as that, I wouldn't do anything except make sure the gig bags are protected from other stuff in the trunk smashing the basses. And you may need to have some set-up work done after the basses acclimate to your new digs.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

Also, make sure the basses don't get really hot (probably won't happen in the trunk, fortunately).

Thats good news, i'm always wary about making any adjustments to my bass and i dont have time to take it to a shop, leaving in just under 24 hrs and i still have stuff to pack up!

The weather isn't hot at all at the moment and we hardly ever have the heating on in the car so no worries about it being hot in the car.

Thanks for the replies.

Asa.
