I don't think that 1/2 step is going to create any problems with your bass. However, if there is a bunch of buzz or it's fretting out, then yes, you really do need to have it correctly set up. It will help the playability of the bass.

+1, used to play some Metallica covers so I had a bass tuned down to Eb, and set up and intonated for that tuning. The best way to go IMO.

I played with a band where the singer would insist on tuning down a half step. I had one of my basses set up for use when playing with this band.
